EnviroMall Week 2009 – ‘Hang About’

THE MALL HOSTS THE THIRD ANNUAL ENVIROMALL WEEK

EnviroMall Week 2009 focussed on helping cut the estimated 100 million coat hangers that are sent to landfill each year. Working in partnership with Shanks Waste Management and Severnside Recycling customers and retailers were asked to bring in their unused coat hangers, which when recycled will be turned into anything from car parts to garden furniture and wheelie bins.

Every year over 530 million unwanted coat hangers are stashed away in UK homes weighing approximately 17,000 tonnes. During EnviroMall week between the 24th and 28th August The Mall became the first shopping centre in the UK to offer coat hanger recycling. Due to a combined effort at our 20 nationwide locations, over 200,000 coat hangers were stopped from going to landfill.

To encourage shoppers to bring in their hangers EnviroMall gave customers the opportunity to win a years supply of locally grown organic fruit and veg. Consumers and retailers were able to take part in locally focused activities to raise profile of the environmental impact of unwanted coat hangers. Informing members of the public whilst also providing the facilities at their local community Mall in order to recycle their unwanted coat hangers were of top priority.

EnviroMall Week 2009

To mark the end of the campaign The Mall challenged London artists May Safwat and Diego Goulrich to create a four metre ‘art attack’ style tree made out of over 4,000 recycled coat hangers in Wood Green, North West London.

Following the launch of the campaign in 2007, previous EnviroMall weeks have included 2008’s ‘Make a Pledge’ where consumers were challenged to directly effect positive environmental change through their lives.
